09 — What is yoga?
The word yoga is often interpreted as “union” or a discipline that was recorded by the Indian sage Patanjali in a collection of 195 statements known as the Yoga Sutra. In this day and age, most people practicing yoga are engaged in asana—one of the 8 limbs of yoga—which is a sequence of physical postures designed to purify the body and provide the physical strength
10 — What yoga class should I try?
It's a good idea to try different yoga classes to find the style of yoga that is right for you. Vinyasa Flow, and mixed level vinyasa classes tend to be more physically demanding with a faster pace, while Beginner yoga, Deep Stretch Yoga, Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga are less physically challenging.
11 — What should I bring to yoga class?
To get the most out of your workout, come fully prepared with a water bottle, towel and yoga mat. If you don't have a mat yet, we have them for rent at the studio.
12 — What should I wear in yoga class?
Yoga is practiced barefoot. Wear clothing that is breathable and that does not restrict your movement to your yoga class. You may find clothing that is moisture-wicking to make your yoga practice more comfortable.
13 — What about eating or drinking before yoga class?
It is important to come to yoga class hydrated and to drink water after your class. It is best not to eat a full meal three hours before the class starts.
14 — If I have pain or a previous injury, can I practice yoga?
If you have any physical conditions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to the instructor. Yoga is a great way to gain strength, flexibility and balance. If you are under a doctor's care for an acute condition, please be sure to mention that before taking this course.
15 — Can pregnant women do yoga?
Yoga can be very beneficial to pregnant women, but it's important to let your instructor know that you are pregnant. Make sure to avoid any poses that involve twisting, inversions, pranayama, abdominal strengthening poses, and lying on your belly. As your pregnancy progresses balancing poses may get tougher so use the wall or blocks to stay balanced and hold the pose longer.
